Common use:<\/b>
\nThe medication belongs to a class of drugs called\u00a0calcium channel blockers<\/b>\u00a0and decreases trans-membrane calcium ion flux through calcium channels to the myocardiocytes and smooth muscle cells of coronary and peripheral vessels and arteries.\u00a0Adalat<\/b>\u00a0widens coronary arteries during coronary spasm and influences vessel segments in areas of partial stenosis. It prevents coronary spasm by decreasing the tone of smooth muscles in coronary arteries, increases coronary perfusion, and improves oxygen supply to the myocardium. This facilitates blood pumping and reduces heart workload.\u00a0Adalat<\/b>\u00a0is used for\u00a0hypertension<\/b>\u00a0(high blood pressure) and to treat\u00a0angina<\/b>.<\/p>\n
Dosage and direction:<\/b>
\nThe common dose for\u00a0Adalat<\/b>\u00a0capsules is\u00a010 to 20 mg<\/b>\u00a0three times daily. Swallow capsules whole. Extended-release tablets should be taken once a day, with a usual daily dose of\u00a030 or 60 mg<\/b>, and can be increased up to\u00a0120 mg<\/b>\u00a0if necessary. Swallow tablets whole; do not crush or cut.\u00a0Adalat<\/b>\u00a0can be taken with food. For rapid relief of hypertensive crisis, a single dose of\u00a010 mg<\/b>\u00a0may be taken, with another dose in\u00a030 minutes<\/b>\u00a0if needed.<\/p>\n
Precautions:<\/b>
\nAdalat<\/b>\u00a0is in the FDA pregnancy category C. If over\u00a065 years old<\/b>, consult your doctor for possible lower dosage. Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice as they can increase medication levels in the blood.<\/p>\n
Contraindications:<\/b>
\nConsult a doctor before use if you have\u00a0allergy to Adalat<\/b>, are\u00a0pregnant or breastfeeding<\/b>, have\u00a0cardiogenic shock<\/b>, are taking\u00a0Rifampicin<\/b>, have\u00a0acute hypotension<\/b>, or have had\u00a0ileostomy after proctocolectomy<\/b>; also if under\u00a018 years old<\/b>. Use with caution in cases of\u00a0cardiac insufficiency<\/b>,\u00a0severe aortic stenosis<\/b>,\u00a0acute myocardial infarction with left ventricular failure<\/b>,\u00a0hepatic failure<\/b>,\u00a0cerebrovascular disorders<\/b>,\u00a0hypovolaemia<\/b>, and\u00a0malignant arterial hypertension<\/b>.<\/p>\n
Possible side effects:<\/b>
\nSevere reactions requiring immediate medical attention include\u00a0allergy<\/b>,\u00a0unusually fast or slow heartbeats<\/b>,\u00a0severe dizziness or fainting<\/b>,\u00a0psychosis<\/b>,\u00a0jaundice<\/b>, and\u00a0oedema of legs or ankles<\/b>. Less serious effects include\u00a0headache<\/b>,\u00a0fatigue<\/b>,\u00a0flushing<\/b>,\u00a0insomnia<\/b>,\u00a0vivid or abnormal dreams<\/b>,\u00a0nausea<\/b>,\u00a0constipation<\/b>, and\u00a0increased urination<\/b>, which may worsen with alcohol.<\/p>\n
Drug interaction:<\/b>
\nRarely,\u00a0Adalat<\/b>\u00a0has been associated with\u00a0congestive heart failure<\/b>, especially in patients on\u00a0beta-blockers<\/b>. Hypotension may occur, particularly with other blood pressure-lowering drugs.\u00a0Nifedipine<\/b>\u00a0can increase\u00a0digoxin<\/b>\u00a0toxicity.<\/p>\n
Missed dose:<\/b>
\nNever take a double dose. If it’s almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule.<\/p>\n
Overdose:<\/b>
\nIf an overdose is suspected, seek emergency medical attention. Symptoms may include\u00a0dizziness<\/b>,\u00a0weakness<\/b>,\u00a0chest pain<\/b>,\u00a0difficulty breathing<\/b>,\u00a0fainting<\/b>,\u00a0unusually fast or slow heartbeat<\/b>,\u00a0coma<\/b>,\u00a0slurred speech<\/b>, and\u00a0confusion<\/b>.<\/p>\n
